ITINERARIES

Formentera

One of our favourite itineraries is escaping to the pure shores of Formentera - leaving Marina Ibiza in the morning sunshine and heading south to this unspoilt paradise is the perfect day cruise. Before stepping aboard, we pick up fresh coffee and croissants from one of the local cafés, Cappuccino or Calma, nestled among the marina village of activity and luxury boutiques that beckon spenders with their sheen.

Nowhere is the lure of the sea more powerful in the Balearics than Formentera, where frost-white slithers of sand are smoothed by water in unbelievable shades of azure, turquoise and lapis lazuli that will have you itching to leap in.
— lonely planet

The spectacular exit as we glide out of the marina always grabs attention. With some of the best views of Ibiza Town, Dalt Vila and harbour life, and no matter how many times we’ve seen it, every single departure or approach is another moment of jaw-dropping awe.

Out from the breakwater, we cruise along the coastline past the famous clubs of Playa d’en Bossa, leaving behind the beat from Ushuaia, Hard Rock and Nassau, and enter the impossible blue of the nature reserve from the shallows of Playa Es Cavallet, the last of Ibiza’s silvery beaches that we pass through. We cross the Es Freus channel, a short nautical mile of crystal clear sea that guides the way to Formentera. The Posidonia that begins to cover the ocean floor in green creates the most electric of colours seen from above. In the water, snorkelling around the seagrass will uncover the wonders of the “Lungs of the Mediterranean” - the home to many marine species - that we all must work to protect.

The wind direction usually determines which side of the island we anchor. Dropping anchor in this area must be well considered to avoid destroying the Posidonia beneath. Choosing the west of Formentera, we find the buzz of Illetes and well-loved eateries and beach clubs, including El Pirata and Juan y Andreas, that offer delectable dishes and good vibes. Our favourite on this stretch of coast is Molin de Sal where lobster paella is served on the shore.

We tend to prefer the quieter areas of Formentera and a cherished spot is found further south at Cala Saona and the caves beyond. The incredible hues of this part of the island are like nowhere else. The white sand and turquoise bay are encircled by red rocks creating a rainbow of colours. The gently sloping sand makes this a perfect place for swimming from the beach. Taking a hike here, nature trails meander through terrain of juniper and pines. Shady areas offer the cool for a short stop or a lazy picnic.

Quieter still, the eastern side of Formentera provides stunning places that are generally less busy and yet excellent options for lunch or a starlit dinner. Playa de Levante is a peaceful beach with a long stretch of sand and stunning water to dive into. Anchoring here presents a unique view of Es Vedra and the Mediterreanean sunsets are incredible. Cruising further south, the cove of Es Caló is the only place in Formentera with an extraordinarily rocky bottom meaning that the water is gin-clear and swimming here is a truly unforgettable experience.

At Komodo, we go wherever you’d like to, but we prefer to seek out undiscovered spots and hidden coves, where beach paths are far less trodden and we have the water to ourselves. Journey with us to connect to something wilder or enjoy a balance of social evenings with tranquil days.
