Six Senses
Hugging the coastline of Ibiza, we journey round west to find a quiet and more down-to-earth corner of the island, finally arriving at the Six Senses luxurious resort on the northern tip, where, just as they promise, you not only arrive at a destination, you travel to an entirely different frequency.
Leaving Marina Ibiza, we cruise along the south coast where, for the epicureans and the revellers, we moor up amid the swirl of popular beaches decorated by well-loved clubs and eateries. First, we anchor on the magnificent strip of Las Salinas, her name borrowed from the trading of salt to the Spanish mainland. This beach is set within the calm waters of a protected nature reserve and is favoured by many for the incredible snorkelling just below the surface. Next, we stop at Cala Jondal where the glamour of Blue Marlin and Ibiza’s celebrated restaurants shimmer invitingly with the promise of excellent company and dining. From here, step ashore to join the glitterati for a champagne brunch before cruising with new friends to Cala Es Torrent, a neighbouring beach of sandy bottomed charm.
For a more spiritual itinerary, succumb to the magnetism of Es Vedrà in the southwest corner of the island. This ‘islote’ has come to symbolise the antithesis of Ibiza’s party reputation and the best place to view its magic is from the relatively secluded Cala d’Hort where we swim and lunch on Ibicencan Paella at one of the best restaurants in Es Boldado.
Travelling south to north, whether coming from Cala Dhor’t or Cala Es Torrent, we then make our way along Ibiza’s west side. From the popularity of Cala Conte to the more peaceful Cala Bassa surrounded by ancient Sabina trees, there are pockets of both activity and tranquillity where to anchor and enjoy dependent on your taste. In Cala Aubarca, there is no phone signal and here lies the perfect excuse to disconnect and fully immerse yourself in life on the waves. Benirrás is a traditional hippy venue with a rhythmic beat. The drum festival has been hosted here every Sunday for decades. It also has the perfect rock for those brave enough to cliff dive. By comparison, the paradisiacal lost cove of Es Canaret is where you can float away on quiet waves.
Our afternoon ends in the crystalline bay of Cala Xarraca. Here is Six Senses and “a meaningful setting for deep spiritual experiences rooted in the local culture, celebrating music, art, sustainable fashion, wellness and spirituality that has become synonymous with the island.”
At Komodo, we don’t like to rush. We are more than happy to settle in and luxuriate among Xarraca’s seascape. But we always ask our guests, shall we stay for the evening and continue our tryste among the north’s Bohemian community, or do we return south to watch the mesmerising sunset over Es Vedrà? The choice is yours to make.
